With More Passion.Yes, I'm trying to blog again after not touching this space for a very long time (Alas! Didn't even welcome 2014 with a post). So logically and unfortunately, I have a huge backlog on my design ideas but I will try my best to catch up and put them here. Aside from that, I'm back to share also more of my passion for illustrating.<br />

I remember that <a href="http://jassaying.blogspot.com/2013/01/saying-hello-to-2013.html">one of the things I would want to do in 2013</a> is to illustrate more. Guess what? I've only given it a proper thought this year. It started with getting a Faber-Castell 48-piece watercolor pencil set from a Christmas exchange gift event in the office and looking at a James Dean portrait.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Then a view of the Sydney Opera House on a late afternoon.<br />

<br />
Later, I decided to put them in a series called CoPenDrawings (short for colored pencil drawings). They are found, together with their draft stage/work-in-progress posts, mainly in my Instagram account.<br />

<br />
I will be doing some explanations on these latest illustrations I made on the next entries. So expect to see illustration-related posts here. Hopefully, I'll be able to pull all the might in doing this (and doing furniture concepts as well) and balance things out as I bring myself to blogging again. :)Jasper Jay Gomezhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18178590300711340366noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-792217895236350717.post-39936946831350716652013-07-23T00:12:00.002+08:002013-07-23T00:13:58.736+08:00Design Idea: Pinnacle.<div style="text-align: justify;">
The last post I had under my <a href="http://jassaying.blogspot.com/search/label/Design">Design Ideas</a> was my <a href="http://jassaying.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-different-flavor.html">first attempt</a> to design a chair in Google SketchUp. I called it the Pinnacle Chair. I promised to redo it in CAD since I still don't have rendering tool for my SketchUp. I wasn't able to do it right away though as I was pretty occupied with work in the past couple of weeks that I had to let it all pass before I can bring myself completely into this.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So here's the Pinnacle, reinterpreted in AutoCAD.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3usAZ59N0RY/Ueue98sOfSI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/0mZUfvM5zug/s1600/Pinnacle_solo.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3usAZ59N0RY/Ueue98sOfSI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/0mZUfvM5zug/s1600/Pinnacle_solo.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a>The inspiration for this one was drawn from the shapes of the mountains, triangle and octagon.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FNXji8eDD_0/UeumXyun4rI/AAAAAAAAAlw/ZaEYFfBYpMs/s1600/P7220368+(480x640).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FNXji8eDD_0/UeumXyun4rI/AAAAAAAAAlw/ZaEYFfBYpMs/s400/P7220368+(480x640).jpg" width="300" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started the design by using the shape of the octagon for the top and base. I took out the short edges and connected the long ones by joining each line from the top and the ones that are perpendicular to it from the base, thus forming the X shape on each corner.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oaJXBxisFGc/Ueufea1EtbI/AAAAAAAAAlY/Hkl6TJ2A48E/s1600/Pinnacle_first.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oaJXBxisFGc/Ueufea1EtbI/AAAAAAAAAlY/Hkl6TJ2A48E/s1600/Pinnacle_first.jpeg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 13px;">Pinnacles in light brown, chartreuse, and light red.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
</td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: justify;"></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Then I just picked two parallel sides to place the pinnacles. A pinnacle is formed using the shape of the mountains. Each mountain top culminates in an inverted triangle. I intended to put them at front on the render for emphasis but in the real world, the untouched side would be the front in order for the sitter to move his/her feet freely.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eIuHzWsBESE/Ueufo8qb1qI/AAAAAAAAAlg/vG5qoIAcr7k/s1600/Pinnacle_second.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eIuHzWsBESE/Ueufo8qb1qI/AAAAAAAAAlg/vG5qoIAcr7k/s1600/Pinnacle_second.jpeg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pinnacles in dark gray, periwinkle, and orange.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Admittedly, among the designs I made and shared on this blog, THIS IS MY FAVORITE (so far, although the <a href="http://jassaying.blogspot.com/2013/02/putting-some-sunshine.html">Inverse</a> comes really close hahaha)! I guess I've become more and more inclined to taking inspirations from nature and geometry.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
P.S. I've decided to put "Design Idea:" to the title of each furniture design concept post (so I renamed the old posts) as I'm going for consistency and I want to easily distinguish them from the other posts here on this blog. And for you, dear reader, I hope you'll find this convention much more convenient. :)</div>

I was lucky to get the last copies of these - the Lark Studio Series' Chair and Tables. I bought them last Christmas vacation from Fully Booked in Gateway Mall at Cubao, Quezon City.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IFdg5sQERFQ/Uc_pQmYlwbI/AAAAAAAAAj8/btzNCpBzznk/s640/P7010354+(640x480).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IFdg5sQERFQ/Uc_pQmYlwbI/AAAAAAAAAj8/btzNCpBzznk/s640/P7010354+(640x480).jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I stumbled upon these pocket size books on a visit to that bookstore months before but I didn't have the money then. They were a perfect Christmas gift to myself since I did not have much to do when I spent the holidays in the province.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The design selections of the books were taken from the classic books, 500 Chairs and 500 Tables. I have yet to see those ones and I assume they are more expensive than these.<br />
<br />
After reading the books, I was completely blown away! This interest of mine in furniture design became inexplicably insatiable. For the first time, I've seen a good marriage between my love for reading and enthusiasm for furniture design since most of the design sections of the major bookstores here are entirely dedicated to architecture and interior design.<br />
<br />
The chairs and tables tickle your fancy, leaving you to think about how vast creativity can go and how stunning craftsmanship can be. There are actually many bizarre looking chairs and tables that some of them are considered as art pieces. I'll still be looking for books that would feature furniture and hopefully I have the money to spare haha. For now I'll leave you with my favorite picks! :)<br />

It was high time for me to try SketchUp! Loooooong overdue activity to be honest.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sometime last month, I suddenly recalled that my SketchUp 8 installer had been buried long enough in my hard drive. I got it last year from my friend, Allie, who taught me how to go about the different tools of the software. So I pulled it up and installed it on my computer and earlier this month, I began to experiment with it. Basically, I tested the nature of SketchUp - the correspondence of its tools to AutoCAD. I discovered that not all the functions I know in AutoCAD are present in SketchUp. They have to be downloaded and copied to the plugins folder. Even the render tool has to be downloaded that's why I just screen grabbed the one below. This is my first design attempt and I call it the Pinnacle Chair. I shall redo this in AutoCAD and tell the story behind the design on my next post.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hh93A7q0gDc/UbyfR_Fq2LI/AAAAAAAAAjo/nmPeyeDP26M/s1600/Pinnacle+Chair+(800x450).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hh93A7q0gDc/UbyfR_Fq2LI/AAAAAAAAAjo/nmPeyeDP26M/s640/Pinnacle+Chair+(800x450).jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
To sum up the experience, I was trying to do something outside my comfort zone (AutoCAD) which I have been in for more than a year now. Nagpapaka-versatile! (Trying to become versatile!) So it's now possible that the upcoming design posts would be done either on SketchUp or AutoCAD.</div>

Of Shapes and Weave.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I had a week-long break last month to spend some summer time in the province. Lengthy vacations are great stress relievers but at the same time, they easily break your mind and spirit when you're about to get back to work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So a few days before it ended, I looked around the house and took some photos of things that I think would help me in designing my next furniture concept. When I saw our old chairs with solihiya weaved seats, I knew how my next design would look like.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SlMqyLdwfk4/UXUZ7RjHxCI/AAAAAAAAAiI/0Qbn6Q8coZc/s1600/Prisms_2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SlMqyLdwfk4/UXUZ7RjHxCI/AAAAAAAAAiI/0Qbn6Q8coZc/s1600/Prisms_2.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
The solihiya weave is an old and famous weaving pattern in the Philippines that is commonly applied on the seats and seat backs of dining and rocking chairs.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
A closer look got me particularly interested with the shape formed by the solihiya weave - <b>an octagon that has extended edges</b>.<br />
<br />
Inspired by the shape, I sketched the whole table support (I don't know but I'm not comfortable on calling them horizontal legs, sounds wrong) by following the arrangement of the rattan strips. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I call it the Prisms coffee table because the alternately overlapping rectangles would become rectangular prisms once they get extruded. I subtracted half of the inside of the prism and added an array of inscribed geometric shapes - square, circle, ellipse, and rectangle respectively. One might say that the metallic array can be likened to the balustrade.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Just this afternoon, Nikki (my friend and office-mate, plus a talented illustrator *wink*) and I visited the Art In The Park event held at Jaime Velasquez Park in Salcedo Village, Makati City. It was amusing, although some overpriced art pieces (which can be DIY projects in our opinion) raised our eyebrows.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/313407_10151537417829534_491078866_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/313407_10151537417829534_491078866_n.jpg" /></a></div>

<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/484660_10151537418814534_1594800790_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/484660_10151537418814534_1594800790_n.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
On our way out, we thought again (but this time, very seriously) of implementing our illustration plans this year. Nikki wants to paint things and have them framed. I want to doodle for a 2014 calendar. I'm still a furniture concept designer. But I've been passionate about drawing since the Power Rangers and Sailormoon days when I repeatedly drew the T-Rex machine and Usagi Tsukino and her gang, practically on any paper I held.<br />
<br />
I wish someone would watch over me and slap me whenever I get way too lazy on my free time but yes, the Art In The Park is a wake up call!</div>

Putting Some Sunshine.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Rendering with sunlight is something that I've been meaning to do for a long time. So I'm more than happy to share to you that I have finally accomplished this goal!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Presenting the Inverse Table X Sunlight project! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b_COtZ9MyGw/URuo6lgb-yI/AAAAAAAAAf4/yABhKLRB8ik/s1600/Inverse+Southeast.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b_COtZ9MyGw/URuo6lgb-yI/AAAAAAAAAf4/yABhKLRB8ik/s1600/Inverse+Southeast.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<b style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></b>
<b style="font-weight: bold;">An Artificial Point Light Fan - </b>Well, for me, point lights are easier to set up and utilize as the primary lighting. By default, the sky and sun setting is turned off. A point light radiates light in all directions evenly so the only thing I'd do is to put it on the correct place.<br />
<br />
<b>Restless</b> - Admittedly, I became so comfortable in using them that it came to the point where I did not want to pursue anymore the challenge of using natural light in the rendering process. But later on, I felt the dissatisfaction of not being able to do it and hence <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=792217895236350717#editor/target=post;postID=6810472142872143241;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=2;src=postname">a goal for this year</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Background image from www.johnsonscreek.co.uk.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b>The Process</b> - It was my first time so indeed it was challenging and learning the different settings involved was stimulating. Luckily, I found this <a href="http://cad-notes.com/2010/07/setting-up-autocad-sun-light-is-easy/">tutorial from CAD-Notes</a>. It's perfect because it's very straightforward and didn't give me any time to worry about dear sunshine. The only bad thing about the experience? I was snarling and cursing at the really slow render time haha!15 to 30 minutes?! Plus my new laptop hanged for two to five times, so imagine the frustration. But, it was pointless for me to even do so since sunlight rendering is a heavy computational task for the computer. Hopefully, I can find tips on reducing the render time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b>A Realization</b> - I'm a sucker for sunlight rendering! I plan to do more of it in the future. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Afnjz9tbhfs/USBGCqnMmCI/AAAAAAAAAhA/GLWaZiTKOZk/s1600/P2190536.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Afnjz9tbhfs/USBGCqnMmCI/AAAAAAAAAhA/GLWaZiTKOZk/s640/P2190536.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-47I5EqJK3rI/URunGk9iq0I/AAAAAAAAAfo/uKaSfx8ljRM/s1600/Inverse+Front.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-47I5EqJK3rI/URunGk9iq0I/AAAAAAAAAfo/uKaSfx8ljRM/s1600/Inverse+Front.jpeg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now for the table design, the Inverse table is supposedly composed of a glass surface, supported by upside-down pairs of wooden legs. The pairs are brought together by thin wooden poles in continuous end to end manner giving an impression of a twisted geometry when viewed at different angles.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LFgZySGvlnE/URunN3I8z3I/AAAAAAAAAfw/EEWwzNLsyJo/s1600/Inverse+Side.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LFgZySGvlnE/URunN3I8z3I/AAAAAAAAAfw/EEWwzNLsyJo/s1600/Inverse+Side.jpeg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A twisted illusion.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
And for the inspiration, I simply wanted to create something that turns geometry into a figure that can identify with sculpture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AHZVo-INhi8/UR5GYw0kSYI/AAAAAAAAAgc/ZQg9CHoGVO8/s1600/Inverse+Top.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AHZVo-INhi8/UR5GYw0kSYI/AAAAAAAAAgc/ZQg9CHoGVO8/s1600/Inverse+Top.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm just amazed by the progress I'm making with my goals list. Now that this one's out, I'm getting more and more motivated to finish as much as I can.</div>

For the first time, I'm giving this little corner of mine a much needed upgrade:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><span style="background-color: #6aa84f;"><span style="color: white;">A</span></span> <span style="color: #e69138;">B</span><span style="background-color: #6aa84f;"><span style="color: white;">L</span></span><span style="color: #e69138;">O</span><span style="background-color: #6aa84f;"><span style="color: white;">G</span></span> <span style="color: #e69138;">H</span><span style="background-color: #6aa84f;"><span style="color: white;">E</span></span><span style="color: #e69138;">A</span><span style="background-color: #6aa84f;"><span style="color: white;">D</span></span><span style="color: #e69138;">E</span><span style="background-color: #6aa84f;"><span style="color: white;">R</span></span></span><span style="color: #783f04; font-size: x-large;">!</span></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It took me three weeks to finish this doodle project. I got the inspiration from this illustration book called "Illustration School Let's Draw Happy People" by Sachiko Umoto.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img height="640" src="http://cdn2.blogs.babble.com/family-style/files/2011/12/LetsDrawHappyPeople.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="497" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From <a href="http://blogs.babble.com/family-style/2011/12/16/lets-draw-happy-people/">blogs.babble.com</a>.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
I got the book as a Christmas gift from one of my best friends, Sol. Instead of getting a black hoodie that I have been wishing for, I told her to buy this as soon as I found it among the packed shelves of SM Naga's National Bookstore. There are two other books in the Illustration School set - Let's Draw Cute Animals and Let's Draw Plants and Small Creatures. I believe there are more copies in other bigger branches.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I decided to doodle for the blog header because I love to draw. I took some of my previous furniture concept designs and imagined them being used by people in doodle fashion. Using GIMP, I painted all the furniture and treated everything else with airbrush and patterns. I was really happy experimenting with the colors!</div>

<a name='more'></a>Many wonderful things happened to me back in 2012. I was able to pull myself together and get back to doing what I love: Designing. This happened after taking the AutoCAD class late in 2011 up to February last year. I narrowed down the possibilities in the field and found my love for furniture design and took the courage to share my design ideas online. My family and friends showed their support for my passion. And then I met new friends who also shared their passion for different things. The trips to Boracay and Davao inspired me to see and live more. Indeed it was an awesome year!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Now, what are the things that I want to do this 2013?</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #e69138;"><b>Come up with more interesting aesthetics and ideas for functional furniture design.</b></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #e69138;"><b>Continue to improve my craft in AutoCAD (Also known as the use of sunlight for the lighting haha!).</b></span></li>

And there is one thing that I'm seriously looking forward to happen this year - turn a few of my designs into real ones. I'm now looking for an excellent carpenter that will help me do this. Though I really wanted to take a course in basic carpentry, I'm not sure if my time will allow it (Yes, I'm a slave to household chores at times). I'll let you know if I get to do it. Anyway, I'm lucky enough to have my mom help me on the search as she has a very wide network of friends back home. My hopes are <span style="color: #38761d;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">H</span>I<span style="font-size: large;">G</span><span style="font-size: x-large;">H</span></span> for this year!</div>

Back in October, a friend from the office, who happens to own a furniture customization business, approached me and asked for a bed design idea suitable for a condominium unit. I can't remember if it was a studio or a one bedroom unit. Anyway, assuming that it was a small space, I picked the sofa bed and started sketching my version of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here's the Stack.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nj-rtSzi9SQ/UMXzmZCmntI/AAAAAAAAAYw/eHRUCvLdASg/s1600/1+STACK+(sofa+form_1).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nj-rtSzi9SQ/UMXzmZCmntI/AAAAAAAAAYw/eHRUCvLdASg/s1600/1+STACK+(sofa+form_1).jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="text-align: justify;">Basically, the Stack is a pile of wooden mattresses connected by two metallic sliders. There are also metallic holders for easy grip when changing the sofa into a bed.</span><br />
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KI6voCjuNDo/UMXzsafQfKI/AAAAAAAAAZA/2RtxmTfxLMA/s1600/3+STACK+(metal+handle+and+slider).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KI6voCjuNDo/UMXzsafQfKI/AAAAAAAAAZA/2RtxmTfxLMA/s1600/3+STACK+(metal+handle+and+slider).jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I forgot to add a perspective wherein that brown mattress below can be removed, so that what's left is a space that can be utilized for storage of books or practically anything.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jHc3OJTu2Cc/UMXzqHKsqwI/AAAAAAAAAY4/qRisWtr3Ssg/s1600/2+STACK+(sofa+form_2).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jHc3OJTu2Cc/UMXzqHKsqwI/AAAAAAAAAY4/qRisWtr3Ssg/s1600/2+STACK+(sofa+form_2).jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next image shows how the sofa transforms into a bed. The upper wooden mattress is lifted from 0 to 360 degrees.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lkZmMhfLWgA/UMXzuTusO_I/AAAAAAAAAZI/AM_rl2slQ1o/s1600/4+STACK+(lift).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lkZmMhfLWgA/UMXzuTusO_I/AAAAAAAAAZI/AM_rl2slQ1o/s1600/4+STACK+(lift).jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0JzZpy8dXWo/UMXzytvv4PI/AAAAAAAAAZU/p2Y6S3EeYdI/s1600/5+STACK+(transform).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0JzZpy8dXWo/UMXzytvv4PI/AAAAAAAAAZU/p2Y6S3EeYdI/s1600/5+STACK+(transform).jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Pushing via the sliders will combine the mattresses into a king size bed.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PX_r0agk1lk/UMXz2FI_PkI/AAAAAAAAAZc/hSTeSU8MEIU/s1600/6+STACK+(bed+form).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PX_r0agk1lk/UMXz2FI_PkI/AAAAAAAAAZc/hSTeSU8MEIU/s1600/6+STACK+(bed+form).jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Well, there are two good things that I got from doing this:<br />
<ul>
<li>I was able to finish this design in three hours! Well, this was not a leisure work compared to my previous works that had no deadlines haha.</li>
<li>Of course I got to try something new since I usually work on chair and table designs.</li>
</ul>
<div>
I submitted these perspectives to my friend and he liked it. But right now I don't have any news if the design was picked up or shown to a client (hoping it does).</div>

October 28 to November 4. It was a long break from work.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: orange; font-size: x-large;">AND IT WAS VERY NICE!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I visited my hometown, the city of Naga in the province of Camarines Sur, to spend the Halloween holidays. On November 1 and 2, my family and I paid a visit to my mother's hometown, Bulan, Sorsogon. They say Sorsogon is the Switzerland of the Orient. It's got many mountain ranges that I would always look forward to seeing them whenever I get the chance to go to Bulan. In those two days, I did some pleasant photowalking.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r_ylYCHnO38/UJ03ExU1VLI/AAAAAAAAAWo/0ppl7zR2J6s/s1600/110220121811.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r_ylYCHnO38/UJ03ExU1VLI/AAAAAAAAAWo/0ppl7zR2J6s/s1600/110220121811.jpg" /></a></div>

<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On day 1, my relatives and I dropped by a locally known place of recreation called Sabang Beach Resort. I was really craving for the halo-halo that is sold by a restaurant whose owner knows some of my family. But we had to wait for the others to come so for the meantime, my nephews and I decided to take a walk on the shoreline. We brought our cameras, a GEX 500 from my nephew Ralph, and my own mobile phone, a Nokia E5. Though the beach is very ordinary, I took the time to capture different scenes as much as possible.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On day 2, we went to a friend of my mom and another relative, both living uptown. I just had my Nokia phone and we were coming back to Naga City later that day.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I arranged the photos by size so it's a mix of the scenes by the sea and uptown.</div>

Apparently, this is not the "interesting chair" that I declared on my last post a month ago. I still have some reservations on how to execute its design but nevertheless I shelved that concept for future work.<br />
<br />
For the meantime, this is the first time that I moved away from the indoor theme that has been present in my previous designs. You might expect a sunlight on the output. Alas, I still haven't tested my skill on the natural lighting department (but it's still on my AutoCAD priorities list). So before I dive into the natural lighting worry pool, here's my outdoor chair concept that incorporates lines and some curve, the Intersect 22.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Why the name Intersect 22?<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eN8pJJUSXUA/UHwaZNuXb8I/AAAAAAAAASk/lCkknfBmw-I/s1600/Intersect+22+(front).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eN8pJJUSXUA/UHwaZNuXb8I/AAAAAAAAASk/lCkknfBmw-I/s1600/Intersect+22+(front).jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
If you look closely on the left and right views (see below) of the design, there are 22 metallic poles (11 on each joint arm rest and legs) that appear to be intersecting to the naked eye. But with regard to how I placed them, they don't really meet. I used the Loft command to create the poles. Loft is very useful when you don't need to specify the height of the object. It's very appropriate if you want to join two 2D objects and convert them into a single 3D entity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e1NA2lk2vB0/UHwaa2CWBJI/AAAAAAAAASs/BgTQYGJHDy4/s1600/Intersect+22+(left).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e1NA2lk2vB0/UHwaa2CWBJI/AAAAAAAAASs/BgTQYGJHDy4/s1600/Intersect+22+(left).jpeg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q7rc22tfwuE/UHwaccHUTwI/AAAAAAAAAS0/DOAztss5lPs/s1600/Intersect+22+(poles).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q7rc22tfwuE/UHwaccHUTwI/AAAAAAAAAS0/DOAztss5lPs/s1600/Intersect+22+(poles).jpeg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The difficult part came on designing the seat itself. It's composed of three rectangular 3D objects linked by the command Union and the tilted appearance was the result of applying Fillet. It was hard to connect one to the other as they were all slanted in different directions. I was happy in the end to have surpassed that even if it took me almost 30 minutes haha. To add stability, there are two poles underneath the seat and they connect the legs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I envisioned this as an outdoor chair since the wooden materials I utilized were more similar to the wooden porch flooring that's commonly seen in houses. Plus, it's also a reclining chair. I can imagine someone reading a book and sitting idly on that. :)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-03S-nw9PwPA/UHwaeYFFMdI/AAAAAAAAAS8/z2YagnPtu74/s1600/Intersect+22+(right).jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-03S-nw9PwPA/UHwaeYFFMdI/AAAAAAAAAS8/z2YagnPtu74/s1600/Intersect+22+(right).jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
P.S. - Here's my sketch for this one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Seven-In-One.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While I was already on the process of designing my next chair (a round ottoman), I encountered an illustration from the AutoCAD book that I'm reading (this book came from the <a href="http://jassaying.blogspot.com/2012/05/my-love-affair-with-design.html">AutoCAD weekend class</a> I attended earlier this year) and it depicted a shape similar to a jigsaw puzzle. I was quick to hold off the round ottoman and jumped into doing this one. I was really engrossed by the shape that was made possible by a specific AutoCAD command.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mP36m4K79yo/UFcuIDzQ_yI/AAAAAAAAARc/bm8bEgfK6Yg/s1600/Jigsaw+Whole.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mP36m4K79yo/UFcuIDzQ_yI/AAAAAAAAARc/bm8bEgfK6Yg/s1600/Jigsaw+Whole.jpeg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Jigsaw ottoman.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
I didn't take a picture of the shape as it is copyrighted. So I just drew it with an arrow pointing to what the final design would look like.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0hNCd9CAMGA/UF1ldU2vs2I/AAAAAAAAASI/3KaQnEv4edg/s1600/P9210339.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0hNCd9CAMGA/UF1ldU2vs2I/AAAAAAAAASI/3KaQnEv4edg/s400/P9210339.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The PEDIT command made this doable of turning the combined double cross figure, technically a polyline in AutoCAD, into a jigsaw puzzle piece shape by executing the Fit sub-command.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WsFU4TFuc74/UFcuPYNDpZI/AAAAAAAAARs/ezhdZPoiKz0/s1600/Jigsaw+top.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WsFU4TFuc74/UFcuPYNDpZI/AAAAAAAAARs/ezhdZPoiKz0/s1600/Jigsaw+top.jpeg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the final design, I divided it into seven pieces and used a different fabric material for each ottoman. This gives a person with a unique personality and taste a chance to pick a seat that he/she thinks that represents him/her. Each seat can also speak for the current mood of a person. </div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v3EHaSAiBJQ/UFcuLUOMjtI/AAAAAAAAARk/4mWQsiF-PPc/s1600/Jigsaw+separated.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v3EHaSAiBJQ/UFcuLUOMjtI/AAAAAAAAARk/4mWQsiF-PPc/s1600/Jigsaw+separated.jpeg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Take your pick!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
That nippy burst of inspiration to do this just really made me happy. Now I wonder when I shall be able to finish that round ottoman (the design's a bit difficult to do) now that I got another interesting chair design idea that I really want to do soon.</div>

You might accuse me of being very domesticated for doing this activity but I just had to look for ways to fight boredom, a thing that loves to visit me on weekends. The whole month of August had me fixated on shaping origami furniture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aGxtxNO_Cdw/UEr1KkGxGrI/AAAAAAAAARA/s8WMH2oc-nI/s1600/P9070250.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aGxtxNO_Cdw/UEr1KkGxGrI/AAAAAAAAARA/s8WMH2oc-nI/s1600/P9070250.JPG" /></a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a>The last time I did origami was during my elementary years. I remember that they were all flower figures and from then on I always equated the art of origami to anything floral. I can blame that on the origami packaging in the early days - the instructions at the back would always illustrate the flower form.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Pk-dcIINWJ0/UErzaJYZ2_I/AAAAAAAAAPE/ie8WZTtoaa4/s1600/P6300001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Pk-dcIINWJ0/UErzaJYZ2_I/AAAAAAAAAPE/ie8WZTtoaa4/s320/P6300001.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Got this from Saizen Daiso store.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I can't always devote my free time to sketching designs. Inspiration is a visitor that is not as frequent as boredom. So when I found out about furniture origami from <a href="http://www.origami-make.com/howto-origami-furniture.php">Origami-Make</a>, I scrambled to find a set of origami paper. It got me so happy to know that I'll be doing the origami in forming these things that I'm passionate about. Or crazy about.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tucl3cc-1R4/UErzQeW41dI/AAAAAAAAAO8/kkySGDxl_JM/s1600/P6291681.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tucl3cc-1R4/UErzQeW41dI/AAAAAAAAAO8/kkySGDxl_JM/s400/P6291681.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I started doing it from the last days of July.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The mania for it didn't stop at a few chairs and a table. I targeted to create the entire furniture origami listed in the site. Sadly, I didn't have a storage bigger than a mere shoe box to contain all of them and my sister might throw them out. I just selected interesting pieces for the activity and decided to add a little personal touch on some of them.</div>

And another one with a similar look.<br />

When August came, my zest for the upcoming Davao trip was wobbly. I had no idea what to put on the itinerary. Certainly, the "Davao = Durians" thinking did not help. And I was still reeling a bit from the expenses in Boracay back in June. But the biggest thing that almost ruined my gusto? The torrential monsoon rains that pounded the metro!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
I was just left asking in the dark, "Will I ever get to say '<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="color: #6aa84f;">Hello</span> <span style="background-color: #f1c232; color: #e06666;">D</span><span style="color: #0b5394;">a</span><span style="background-color: #a64d79;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3;">v</span></span>a<span style="color: #8e7cc3;">o</span>!</span>'?"<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G0Sx85q3H5E/UDeqbHzm63I/AAAAAAAAAMc/YLPhZKX1x3g/s1600/DSC_0099.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G0Sx85q3H5E/UDeqbHzm63I/AAAAAAAAAMc/YLPhZKX1x3g/s1600/DSC_0099.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
On the last minute, my sister and I decided to take a more relaxed city tour since our mom was with us. She's not fond of doing extreme activities. I think it was also very fitting to get to know Davao City closely and brush aside the "Davao = Durians". I got some life saving moment when I got my credit card to cover up the whole hotel expense. Miraculously, <span style="color: #f1c232; font-size: x-large;">Mr. Sunshine </span>made a glorious comeback on the day of our trip and erased my worries of cancelling the weekend expedition!<br />
<br />
Near the end of the city tour, a certain delay on the schedule had us stumble upon a peculiarly beautiful place. This wasn't really part of the itinerary but our good tour guide (Samuel Libre, yes that's his name) took us there. It's called <a href="http://www.poncesuites.net/">Ponce Suites Gallery Hotel</a> which happened to be a hotel and an art gallery at the same time. When we entered the place, I began to feel agitated, wondering "This isn't a hotel, is it?"<br />
<br />
By the time I was on the landing and started to look at every corner, my art-loving soul screamed "OH MY GOD, THIS IS AN ART SANCTUARY!" <a href="http://www.poncesuites.net/artist.htm">Kublai Ponce Millan</a> is responsible for fathering thousands of artwork (paintings and sculptures) displayed all over the place. He's a Fine Arts graduate of the University of the Philippines.<br />
<br />
Warning though, some images are not for the faint-hearted and may creep you out.<br />

Night fell and I handed over my tip to Kuya Sam for taking us to that brilliant place. The experience just bumped up my love for Davao City even if it was just my first time there. Their value and appreciation for art and design is remarkable.<br />

P.S. Their public park is really spacious. Don't miss that out when you go there.</div>

It wasn't a trip down the memory lane, but a few days ago, I suddenly remembered my design for what could have been the final version of my thesis poster. I rushed and took out my external hard drive to find out if I still have a copy. Lucky that I still have it! </div>

As much as I would like to think that I had already a penchant for geometric figures from that time, no. In my school, during my time, we (CS majors) did not prioritize much the user interfaces of our respective theses since they were researches by nature and functions were more important. In other words, I had to make up for the simple UI by creating a good representation of what my thesis is about. Those cubic blocks represented the information that were shown by the software I made. The lines were added for a modern and digital look. Well, I don't plan to explain my lengthy thesis here. If you're wondering, the poster was part of the requirements for passing the thesis course.</div>

Speaking of requirements, there was also a CD cover. The CD contained all the files that composed the developed software, along with the images and powerpoint presentation.<br />

The final version of the poster was streamlined. But at least the CD cover got to be retained haha. I'm just glad that I remembered this one. Its Unlikely Inspiration.<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love lines! I do. Whether they're intersecting or parallel to one another. Be they diagonal or perpendicular. You name them, I love them. They're generally evident in my previous designs. But this time, I was up to the challenge (as well as part of improving my furniture drafting and designing craft) of putting some curves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is The Elliptical. The inspiration behind it? Prepare to say 'very unlikely'!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
You probably exploded with "What and where the hell did you get that?!" Okay, here's the story. I graduated with a degree in Computer Science that (in my school) included two Calculus subjects during my time. One of them was Integral Calculus and we had a discussion on how to compute the volume of a cylindrical shell through integration. Maybe I should end this intellectual talk by showing you what a cylindrical shell looks like.</div>

<br />
This was my initial idea for the design. It was simply a cylinder. I found it a bit typical so I went for an elliptical shape. The top is supposedly made of wood and painted with the color white.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The reason why I added those gray chairs (I utilized, again, wood entirely on them and paired each chair with a blue chair cushion.) is to complete the closed form of the elliptical table. I used the Loft command to achieve that curvy look. Loft is already part of my favorite AutoCAD commands list, <strike>Just</strike> Jas saying.<br />
<br />
I guess this is a good idea for saving some space! Finally, what I consider as the highlight of this concept is the reflective and metallic finish on the table's legs and merged bottom.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white;">That's what I learned from the Eiga Sai Film Festival 2012. Well, 60 percent of it came from the fact that watching the films was free. The rest? The Shangri-La Mall mainly hosted this event (annually!) and that mall is a five-minute ride from where I'm staying; I'm not a die-hard fan but I can say that I like almost anything about the Japanese culture (I'm an anime fan by the way); Eiga Sai is something different from the things that take up my current normal day so I wanted to try.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="background-color: white;">Before I get to the films that I've seen, here's a little background about this event. The Eiga Sai has been running since 1997. The month of July is the Philippines-Japan Friendship Month and on its fifth year, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, in partnership with the </span><a href="http://www.jfmo.org.ph/">Japan Foundation Manila</a><span style="background-color: white;"> and other organizations has hold out a lineup of activities that showcases the Japanese culture and one of them is the said film festival. On its 15th year, Eiga Sai is featuring several contemporary films from different genres. The good thing about this event is that the films will also be shown to different parts of the country.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white;">Out of the 10 films, I managed to watch five. After seeing one, I challenged myself to see all of them. I was after the 7:00 pm schedule (the only available schedule for this adventurous employee) on the weekdays but there were some repeat showings. Hey, it was my first time to this event and I'm proud of this accomplishment!</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">I began watching on the first Sunday of the festival. The first movie I saw was <span style="color: #e06666; font-size: large;">In His Chart</span>.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white;">This is a medical drama about a practicing physician who goes through his life, ponders on what path to take in the field of medicine and comes to question its existence. Viewers get to look on the situation of healthcare in Japan's country side. This film has also some humor and I thought it was a nice starter for me.</span><br />

<br />
The next day, I went to see<span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"> Railways </span>with my friend, Allie. You may have seen that it was shown at 4:30 pm but here's some side story. Weeks before, I asked a favor from Allie to take a leave and accompany me to inquire about the Industrial Design course of the College of Fine Arts in UP Diliman. We had a side trip to Katipunan and it was my first time there in my two years of living in Manila. Can you believe that? We finished early and decided to watch another (my 'another', this was her 'first') film from the event. Railways isn't entirely about trains, not even about the life of a train driver for that matter. A powerful corporate executive arrives at the point of deciding things caused by a death of a long-time friend, an illness that has stricken his mother, a crumbling relationship with his family, and a childhood dream. This was a tearjerker for me and the character finally doing his dream job was the part that made me relate myself to the film. There is hope for everyone who wants to work on his/her dream job.<br />
<br />
When I heard about an animated film in the lineup, I just thought 'I'm gonna watch that at all costs!' And this film was <span style="font-size: large;">Colorful</span>. Allie became my movie buddy for the duration of the festival and we were so motivated to get up early for work and get out and rush to Shangri-La Cineplex. The film was shown on Tuesday night by the way.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This is a story of a boy's soul put in a body of a living child. He is tasked to know how he died and along with it, learns the meaning of life and enjoys his second chance on it. Aside from the inspiring story, I am so amazed by the artistry laid on this film - I was taken so much by the use of realistic backdrops that made me remember the visual style of Rurouni Kenshin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I had a break from the festival on Wednesday because it was a rerun of In His Chart, so Allie watched it by herself. Thursday came and we got to watch the lead film of the festival, <span style="background-color: #666666; color: white; font-size: large;">Villain</span><span style="background-color: white;">.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
A man runs away after murdering a girl he met on a dating website, he develops a relationship with a sales lady. The spiraling situation they're in causes madness that would decide the fate of their relationship. This was a very dark film in contrast to the ones I saw earlier. However, I got confused somehow by how the film ended. There were some questions left unanswered. I didn't anticipate the heated scenes and I was bothered that there were kids in the theater (Probably the parents didn't expect the scenes too but they shouldn't have brought their kids to a movie with a title that I think brings a suspicious feeling in the first place.). Nevertheless, the film was good, especially the acting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For the last one, I was supposed to watch Permanent Nobara on the morning of the festival's last Saturday in Shangri-La. However, I got up late and had to do some cleaning around the unit. But since I haven't seen the next film, I decided to give it a try. This time, we were many - my friends Allie (official movie buddy who also scored 5 out of 10 films in the end), Lando, Faye, Lauren, and my sister, Andrea (oops I forgot about her, she was also my movie buddy for In His Chart, and she joined me and Allie for Colorful). We were in for some cuteness overload and slapstick comedy of <span style="color: #0b5394; font-size: large;">Ninja Kids</span>!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Got this from <a href="http://moviebuzzers.com/2011/06/20/nyaff-11-ninja-kids-nintama-rantarou-movie-review/">Movie Buzzers</a>.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
A film adaptation of the manga and anime series, Ninja Rantaro Flunks Again, it's about a little boy who tries to break the streak of unsuccessful ninjas running in his family. Together with his friends, they learn the ways of the ninja and go through several encounters. The kids were really cute in their costumes. Though some parts were off, I just enjoyed and welcomed again the kind of humor I had when I was still a kid. And probably, the moviegoers did too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So, will I go to this event again next year? As long as things are still the same, definitely. And I'd also like to try other film festivals (hoping they're free too). I'm just happy to know that the experience has taught me this kind of determination that I could transform and use in the other aspects of my life (one of them a.k.a. realizing my dream job). :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
P.S.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
When going to this event or even other free film festivals, one has to be REALLY EARLY. Not one hour early but two hours. There's just too many enthusiasts and movie buffs (and people who just go to see them because it's free) around the metro that can snatch your slot. And pray that no clamorous crowd gets in the same movie you want to see.</div>

Lift and...Surpise!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
After designing those chairs that you probably came across with on this humble blog of mine, I began to move on doing tables. In contrast to the first chair I did, which was more of applying what I learned from the AutoCAD course or what I called 'testing the waters', I tried to tinker my creativity in doing this table by tapping in some transformation. The result? A dual purpose table, changing from a coffee table to a playful-looking study table - I did not have any particular name to this design.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Modernity dictates that the bookshelf no longer has to be traditional. Just like the bookshelves you can see on this inspiring <a href="http://freshome.com/2008/02/25/30-of-the-most-creative-bookshelves-designs/">post by Freshome</a>. I'm pretty sure you reacted the same way I did after seeing those beautiful and lovely designs. And talk about inspiration, I did my version of the bookshelf by incorporating it with a bench. </div>

I call this the Book Boxes. Basically, everything here is supposedly made of wood. The seat looks plain but I made sure the boxes (shelves) are playful in color. I added a long white sofa cushion. Although, I don't even see this one to be suitable for comfortable reading. I can only imagine it being used as a waiting chair in a clinic, probably owned by a quirky doctor who loves medical books and design. But then, the shelves can be used to store anything else.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
P.S. - This was my initial idea for the design of the chair. The drawers were supposed to be the ones to have the colors of the boxes. Ambitiously, I added a pull-out bed. Far too ambitious, I simplified the design. Maybe some other time? :)<br />

<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">A preoccupation caused by a random </span><a href="http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Popsicle-Stick-Puzzle" style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">wikiHow post</a><span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"> I saw on my Facebook news feed. I was caught by the premise of this activity that could solve the holed-up-nothing-to-do problem. And I did not mind at all that this was a suggested activity for kids. Nevertheless, this might have helped me begin my return to doing art stuff.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">So, the inspiration? A little hangover of my trip to Boracay Island a few weeks ago.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6AMcfw2JlQU/T_MFIJu88RI/AAAAAAAAAIc/x15LMM7OdU4/s1600/sketch+-+Copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6AMcfw2JlQU/T_MFIJu88RI/AAAAAAAAAIc/x15LMM7OdU4/s1600/sketch+-+Copy.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Hf-uZqzQu2w/T_MAuLyoUzI/AAAAAAAAAH4/qvITLuKzZMM/s1600/watercolor.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Some brushes and watercolor from National Bookstore.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I bought four packs of colored popsicle sticks. Having me (yes, that's me even if it looked terrible) lay on the sand, I started with the basic color.<br />
<div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ncGnzsMDTck/T_MEnSBjCkI/AAAAAAAAAIM/LFx1GbywqY8/s1600/beach+-+Copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ncGnzsMDTck/T_MEnSBjCkI/AAAAAAAAAIM/LFx1GbywqY8/s1600/beach+-+Copy.JPG" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Okay, the crab is the star. Sad to see the smear on my face.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Then I was too lazy to think of another image to paint so I decided on doing freestyle.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WkVHKkt9_Ic/T_ME8aYW0KI/AAAAAAAAAIU/YBYNPNne9n8/s1600/freestyle+-+Copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WkVHKkt9_Ic/T_ME8aYW0KI/AAAAAAAAAIU/YBYNPNne9n8/s1600/freestyle+-+Copy.JPG" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I used all the colors.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I wanted them to be whole so I didn't follow the last step of removing the masking tape that was holding the sticks thus defeating the purpose of the puzzle.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Surely, I had fun that day and boredom just took off.</div>

I went to the mall, SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, along with my mom and niece to stroll. We happened to drop by the Atrium on the 5th floor and I got the urge to take pictures of the skylight and the hanging paper butterflies. I thought the compulsion came really late as I've been seeing these things for many times whenever I pass by that area.<br />

<span style="background-color: white;">The great thing about going to one of the best beaches in the world during the low season?</span></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #e69138; font-size: large;">Aside from having a more wonderful-experience-because-of-the-less-number-of-tourists vacation, you get to relax peacefully because-there's-plenty-of-better-hotels-to-stay-at for a low price!</span><br />
<br />
But I don't want to sound like an advertising junkie here. I just want to share my experience with this lovely apartment we (with my sister and her boyfriend) stayed in Boracay Island the other weekend. Perhaps, it was the best weekend of my life. I got to scratch "To go to Boracay!" off my lifetime wish list. But I do want to go back there someday. Anyhow, this is my first (so-called) design review.<br />
<br />

This is the Mi Sueno Apartments. It's situated on a sort of remote hill of Brgy. Bulabog. It cost us P3000 per night to get two rooms, indeed a very good deal. I failed to get a picture of the entrance but it has this very elevated cemented stairs, with uneven difference in the height between each step that put our patience and stamina to the test. According to the <a href="http://www.myboracayguide.com/resorts/boracay-hotel-MiSueno-116.html">site</a>, the architecture was built to European specifications with Euro/Asian looks.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Inside the rooms, yes, it was very Asian.<br />

Reversible. elbisreveR.By the time I was done with my first chair, I thought I should begin my quest in creating more functional furniture. Inspired by the cramped (and expensive!) home spaces that are sprawling in the metro, I have here my version of a reversible chair.<br />
<br />
What I had in mind was simple - a chair that I can flip with the arm rests, painted with two different colors, becoming the legs, and turn it over back to its early look. I believe this can be convenient for anyone who wants a chair with two looks but takes up the same amount of space.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GHV7i1t2ulw/T9oSTt7YY8I/AAAAAAAAADM/eFpcxAf8ezI/s1600/P6130628.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GHV7i1t2ulw/T9oSTt7YY8I/AAAAAAAAADM/eFpcxAf8ezI/s400/P6130628.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The only sketch I made for the idea.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>In the end, it turned out to be the following figure. I made use of pastel colors, red orange and olive green, to make the arms/legs appear lively. Instead of having a drawer, I carved a thin elongated hole at the front of the seat. Extending to the back, the hole can accommodate two magazines or a few pieces of paper documents for storage.<br />

After finishing this, I started to hope that I can design furniture that balance both aesthetic and function.Jasper Jay Gomezhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18178590300711340366noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-792217895236350717.post-52637620266357771412012-06-05T23:51:00.000+08:002013-07-21T17:43:54.224+08:00Design Idea: Gypsum.As promised, I'll be sharing my furniture concept designs right here, every now and then. Mentioning again that I finally managed to bring myself back to blogging, I'm glad that these experiments, as I like to call them, found their home. So after my graduation from the <a href="http://jassaying.blogspot.com/2012/05/my-love-affair-with-design.html">CAD weekend class in early February</a>, I began to design furniture and it went to become my passionate hobby. As of now, I have designed three chairs and one table, all virtually stored in my portfolio.<br />
<br />
I named my first chair The Gypsum Chair for the reason that I used a gypsum wood as the material for the seat and seat back. For the stile and legs, I used metallic and glossy black and red colors respectively. But before I present the final design, here is the Gypsum Chair design in my early sketch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9vZg3pIkdAw/T84iZo9-EzI/AAAAAAAAACU/Yu3PgOiodck/s1600/P6033395.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9vZg3pIkdAw/T84iZo9-EzI/AAAAAAAAACU/Yu3PgOiodck/s1600/P6033395.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k-DUwuZ2qMw/T84sff-4oJI/AAAAAAAAAC8/H2cxpyXZoxw/s1600/P6033396.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k-DUwuZ2qMw/T84sff-4oJI/AAAAAAAAAC8/H2cxpyXZoxw/s1600/P6033396.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This is the final outcome. I followed the curve on the inner part of the seat. Added curves on the top and edge of it too. I didn't include the foot since I wanted the legs to be bare. And sexy.<br />

My friend, Allie Principe <a href="http://blog.foureyedwonder.com/">The Four-Eyed Wonder</a>, was responsible for creating the watermark. Out of the four designs she prepared, I chose this one and she said it's also her pick, yay for us! Again, thanks Allie!<br />
